Yukie Sato studied classical and baroque singing at the Tokyo University of the Arts in Tokyo, Japan, during which time she also gained valuable experience as an actress in musical theatre. She then went on to study medieval, baroque and opera singing at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland, where she gained Master’s degrees in both medieval and baroque genres.
Yukie has been awarded several prizes both in Japan and internationally, including first prize in the International Early Music Vocal Competition “Canticum Gaudium” (Poznań, Poland, 2013), first prize in the International Competition for Early Music (Yamanashi, Japan, 2015), and third prize in the Handel Aria Competition (Madison, USA, 2014). She has been hailed for her artistry, which “matched solid acting to radiant vocalism” (Madison Magazine, USA), and celebrated for her “perfectly controlled, silvery voice and dazzling coloratura” (Basler Zeitung, Switzerland).
Her repertoire ranges from the medieval to the classical era, and she has performed with renowned musicians and ensembles, such as Andrea Marcon, Ensemble Gilles Binchois (Dominique Vellard), and Mala Punica (Pedro Memelsdorff). Her stage roles include Alcina in Francesca Caccini’s La liberazione di Ruggiero (Basel and Dresden Semperoper) and Italianne/Fantome in Charpentier's Médée with Magdalena Kožená in the main role (Theater Basel). As soloist, Yukie has appeared in many oratorios, including Bach's Johannes-Passion, Handel's Messiah, and Haydn's Die Schöpfung, and she has performed in numerous major music festivals in Europe, both as soloist and ensemble member. Her discography as ensemble soloist includes many CDs, several of which were awarded prizes such as the Diapason d'Or and nominated for Gramophone.
In addition to her work as soloist in various music festivals and regular performances with Early Music ensembles, she founded the duo Vox Poetica with lutenist Leonardo Takiy in Basel, Switzerland in 2014. The duo specializes in music for voice and plucked instruments with the concept of creating a unified poetical expression from their individual parts. Since their formation, Vox Poetica have enchanted listeners in Europe, Brazil and Japan, while, in autumn 2017, beginning to concentrate their activities mainly in Japan. Their CDs received high acclaim and awarded several prizes.
